Led by head coach Alex Hannum, the 76ers had a dream season as they started 46--4,[2] en route to a record of 68--13, the best record in league history at the time.[3] Chamberlain, Billy Cunningham, and Hal Greer, along with all-stars Chet Walker, Lucious Jackson and Wali Jones led the team to the Eastern Conference finals. This time, with the Celtics aging and hurt, the 76ers beat the Celtics in five games. In Game Five of that series, as the 76ers went to victory and the NBA Finals, rabid Philadelphia fans chanted "Boston is dead!"—a symbol that the Celts' eight-year reign as NBA champion had ended. The Finals were almost anticlimatic, with the Sixers ousting the Warriors in six games to give them their first NBA Championship. The 1966-67 Sixers were voted the best team in league history during the NBA's 35th anniversary celebration

Finally, the Toronto Raptors were able to enjoy the comforts of home Wednesday. Anthony Parker poured in 22 points as the Raptors avoided their fourth consecutive loss at the Air Canada Centre with a 109-96 win over the Philadelphia 76ers. ``That's big for us, we need to capitalize on this stretch while we have home games,'' said Chris Bosh, who scored 21 points on the night. ``We just need to pick up our play, we need to continue to believe in ourselves and play with a lot of energy at home because it's definitely an advantage that we need to take.'' Jose Calderon finished with 17 points and nine assists for Toronto (18-17). Carlos Delfino finished with 12 points to lead a solid performance by the bench, and Jamario Moon added eight points, nine rebounds and five blocks. ``We are trying to get easy baskets which opens things up and I think Chris has just been efficient and A.P. (Parker) has played well, Jose has been just steady,'' said Raptors coach Sam Mitchell. ``We're trying to make a conscious effort to get some easy baskets.'' Willie Green had 18 points to top the Sixers (14-22), while Andre Iguodala and Thaddeus Young had 16 apiece. Sixers centre Samuel Dalembert of Montreal finished with eight points and six rebounds. The lead changed hands numerous times through the first half before Toronto broke open the game with a sizzling third quarter in front of 18,067 fans. Bosh led the way with 10 points in the period as the Raptors outscored their visitors 27-16 and took a 79-66 advantage into the fourth. Six consecutive points from Iguodala cut Toronto's lead to just five points midway through the fourth, but that was as close as the Sixers would come. Parker's three with 2:21 left put the Raptors up 103-89, their biggest lead of the game to that point and the Raptors cruised to victory, putting an end to concerns about playing at the ACC this season. Last season, the Raptors had one of the best home records in the NBA, losing just 10 games in Toronto. They've already lost eight this year. But with eight games at the ACC in January, a favourable stretch at home would do plenty to boost the Raptors' placing in the jam-packed Eastern Conference. ``It's important we start doing that on the regular,'' Parker said, of closing out games at home. Parker, meanwhile, shot 8-for-11 from the field in the lastest in of a string of strong performances. ``I had a couple of 2-for-11 games, so it's just the law of percentages, and I'm sure it won't stay 8-for-11 for long,'' Parker said. ``Coaches put some new sets in, and we're getting a lot more motion, and a lot of people are touching the ball and getting some action. I don't think we're working as hard for baskets as we were earlier in the year.'' The Sixers have had problems of their own closing out tight contests. ``I am upset that we are not playing up to our ability late in games,'' Iguodala said. ``Sometimes we get down in the game mentally. It is just tough losing, that is what it is.''

Iverson reminds 76ers what they once had in Nuggets' win When Allen Iverson first played against the Philadelphia 76ers, he took shots at them before, during and after the game. This time, he saved them just for the court, then showered his old team with praise that indicated he's gotten over the bitter split. "They've got a lot of talent on that team. They've got a lot of guys that can do things, and they've got a lot of guys that care, guys with pride," Iverson said after scoring 38 points in Denver's 109-96 win Sunday night. "It could be easy for those guys to lay down. After I left, they could have just laid down. But that ain't the type of personality most of those guys on that team have. They want to win. "I'm pretty sure they want to prove they can win without me. That's what they should do. I just hope they continue to play hard and play every game like it's their last. I just wish them well. ... I just want to see things get better for them." For the first time in his career, Iverson may have enjoyed watching the 76ers lose, but he swore he took no extra gratification in it. "People ask that question all day, but my whole thing is to just win the basketball game," Iverson insisted. "If I had a big game and we didn't win I would be feeling terrible right now. I'm just happy we got the win. Like I said, it's just another basketball game, we went through that whole song and dance last year when they came in here. It wasn't any big deal to me. I just wanted to contribute." No big deal? Nuggets coach George Karl knows better. "I don't know if there was an extra bounce, I just think it was a seriousness in his approach," Karl said. "He's been playing pretty good against other teams, too. I was happy for him to have a big night against his old team. In a lot ways we needed him to. "We weren't very pretty offensively, and I thought his penetration at any moment broke their defense down quite frequently. He got a lot of easy layups because of it. It was a good part of our offense." Andre Miller, one of the players the Nuggets sent to the Sixers in exchange for Iverson, led Philadelphia with 22 points, including a jumper that erased the remnants of a 15-point deficit and tied it at 62. Iverson answered with back-to-back 3-pointers and the Nuggets never trailed in staying a half-game ahead of Portland, which has lost just one of its last 17 games, in the Northwest Division. Iverson's first game against his old team came just three weeks after his nasty 2006 divorce from the 76ers and he was still bitter at the time with the way coach Maurice Cheeks and team owner Billy King handled his complaints that led to his departure after a decade in Philly. He scored 30 in that game last January but didn't stick around for the end, drawing an ejection in the final minutes of a 108-97 loss. The Nuggets had already visited Philadelphia by the time they acquired Iverson, so his first trip back comes March 19, and Iverson isn't sure what to expect or whether it will be a more emotional experience for him than Sunday night was. "Maybe. You don't know what the environment's going to be like," Iverson said. "I know it's going to be strange because I played there so many years and I fell in love with the fans there. I was a part of them, they were a part of me. It's obviously going to be different. "The whole thing is just winning the basketball game. Doing whatever it takes. If you ask me how many points I was going to score tonight, I never know what I'm going to do. I never know how many points I'm going to score. If I didn't score anything I was going to do other things on the basketball court to help my team win. Fortunately, the ball was going in the basket tonight." Iverson had 15 points in the first quarter and 20 by halftime. "Same Allen," Sixers forward Andre Iguodala said. "Great job when he is attacking the basket. Great job of creating some type of contact and getting to the foul line a lot. That's what he does. He seems happy. He is enjoying himself." Maybe so, but Cheeks said he didn't notice anything extra in Iverson's game -- he's always going full-tilt anyhow. "He can score when I had him. He can score now," Cheeks said. "That is his strong point. What he did tonight is no different than he did when he was here with us." Game notes Carmelo Anthony scored 23 points, including 19 to help the Denver build a 53-43 halftime lead. ... Anthony Carter tied his career high with 15 assists for Denver, and the Nuggets blocked a season-best 15 shots. ... Sixers rookie Jason Smith, who grew up an hour from Denver in Kersey, Colo., and attended Colorado State, stuffed Nene on an attempted slam moments after entering the game.

On February 6, 2000, an 8-game 13-day east coast road trip came to an end for the Sacramento Kings, with a battle against Philadelphia. The Kings held a 3-4 record so far on the trip. With Corliss Williamson out with an injury, Peja Stojakovic still banged up and in his 2nd game back from injury, and Vlade Divac's years of playing basketball catching up to his tired knees, Sacramento looks to be overwhelmed in this matchup. Speaking of match-ups, the game was hyped all week as a match-up between two young studs in Jason Williams of the Kings and Allen Iverson of the Sixers. The Answer did not disapoint, pouring in 50 points in this 119-108 victory for Philly. Sorry, I'm missing the final 22 seconds or so, but the outcome was no longer in doubt at that point anyways. Enjoy. ;)

Allen Iverson took plenty of shots at his former team, before, during and after the game. It didn't add up to a win, though. Kyle Korver scored 26 points to help the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Denver Nuggets 108-97 Tuesday night in Iverson's first game against his former team. It was weird to see him wearing a white jersey and we're wearing black," Korver said. "I said to one of our coaches that it is so weird to see him on the other side. It wasn't really a good feeling at all. He's a great player and he meant a lot to Philadelphia." Iverson scored 30 points on 10-of-24 shooting before getting tossed for his second technical with 1:44 remaining. Afterward, he said the loss disappointed him because he feels the Nuggets are the better team. Iverson's best shots, however, came before tip-off when he again ripped the team that traded him to Denver over the holidays, repeating his contention that he should have had more say in the Sixers' style. Iverson also saved a parting shot for official Steve Javie, who ejected him. "I thought I got fouled on that play, and I said I thought that he was calling the game personal, and he threw me out," Iverson said. "His fuse is real short anyway, and I should have known that I couldn't say anything anyway. It's been something personal with me and him since I got in the league. This was just the perfect game for him to try and make me look bad." Actually, Iverson didn't need much help in that regard as he was slow to get going, hitting just two of nine shots and committing three of his game-high seven turnovers in the first quarter. "I thought he was a little excited with the turnovers early in the first half and then not being able to make shots, not only he but everybody," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "That got Philadelphia their legs, their confidence." Ironically, Iverson found himself crediting the Sixers for their game plan. "I couldn't get a rhythm in the beginning of the game. When I found it and got into a little groove, it was too late," Iverson said. "If anybody knows what I can do, they know, and they ran some people at me. They used the zone, and it was effective." The Sixers, who had lost 14 of 16 road games and 19 of their last 23 overall, scored 100 points for the first time in 16 games and improved to 4-4 since the trade that sent Joe Smith and Andre Miller to Philadelphia, along with two first-round draft picks in 2007, for Iverson. Miller had 17 points and 10 assists against his former team and Smith scored 12 points. "This was all business," Smith said. Ditto for Miller. "I got a lump in my throat when the crowd reacted" with applause during introductions, Miller said. "Other than that, it was all business for me." Karl always counted Miller among his favorite pupils and said he "kind of knew Andre was going to have a great game. He's going to make some guys on that team a lot better. I can see he and Korver already have a connection." Iverson doesn't have that yet in Denver, where he's lost four of six and has yet to play with NBA scoring leader Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith, the league's top scoring tandem before their suspensions for slugging it out with the New York Knicks last month. The Sixers, who led by 19 in the second quarter before the Nuggets rallied to tie it at 52 at halftime, led 86-73 after three quarters. Iverson's seven straight points brought Denver to 86-80 but Steven Hunter's dunk followed by three free throws by Korver -- one on Iverson's first technical -- restored Philadelphia's double-digit lead. Rookie Yakhouba Diawara was the only bright spot for Denver, scoring a season-best 23 points on the heels of an 0-for-11 shooting performance against Dallas. After the morning shootaround, Iverson said he felt a player of his stature and tenure should have been listened to when he criticized the Sixers' style of play last month, a condemnation that led to his departure from Philadelphia after 10 tumultuous seasons. "When you're losing basketball games, 12 of 14, 18 of 20 basketball games, you should listen to somebody because something obviously isn't working," he said. Iverson said he was still bitter with the way Sixers coach Maurice Cheeks and team owner Billy King handled his complaints that led to his departure from Philadelphia. "Honestly I hope it goes away, but every time we play the Sixers, I know it is going to come back," Iverson said. "I just want to be a Denver Nugget and not dwell on things that happened in Philadelphia. I owe it to my teammates to just play basketball. I was frustrated tonight because I didn't play as well as I can play." Game notes Iverson won't get to face the Sixers in Philadelphia this season because the Nuggets made their annual trip there before the trade. ... Nuggets G Julius Hodge played the final minute, his first action since being shot in a drive-by last April.

TORONTO, Oct. 31 (AP) -- Midway through the second quarter of the Toronto Raptors' season opener, Jose Calderon threw a high looping pass to Chris Bosh that the All-Star forward finished with a resounding dunk. The point guard tandem of Calderon and T.J. Ford wanted to set the tone for the new season, and they did just that while leading the defending Atlantic Division champions to a 106-97 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night. "T.J. Ford and Jose Calderon did great,'' Raptors coach Sam Mitchell said. "If you look at their stat line, it was unbelievable.'' Ford had 14 points and 12 assists, while Calderon had 13 points and four assists. They each had just one turnover. "I think that's how it has to be all year,'' Ford said. "When we play well, the guys are able to get open and guys will continue to have that confidence.'' Andrea Bargnani scored 20 points, Bosh added 16, and Anthony Parker finished with 13 for the Raptors. Andre Iguodala led the 76ers with 23 points, while Kyle Korver had 20. The Sixers cut a 22-point, third-quarter deficit to 14 heading into the fourth quarter, then pulled to 90-89 on a running jump shot by Iguodala with 4:47 left. Bargnani answered with a 3-pointer and was fouled by Samuel Dalembert. Bargnani made the free throw for just the 14th four-point play in franchise history. That put Toronto back up by five. "They were an important four points,'' Bargnani said. "I received a very nice pass, I was hoping it would come to me and I was a little lucky.'' Ford drove to the basket to finish with a nifty finger roll with 1:46 left, then Jason Kapono, the former Miami Heat 3-point champion, connected on a long jumper to put Toronto up by nine. Bosh had a decent night, despite a left knee injury that limited him to 15 minutes combined over the final two preseason games and kept him out of the previous three games completely. The All-Star forward was 5-for-10 from the field, his alley-oop dunk from Calderon in the second quarter bringing the sellout crowd of 19,800 to its feet. "It felt good to be back out there, but I'm not up to 30 minutes a game yet, so I just have to be patient with the whole situation,'' Bosh said. With Bargnani leading the way, the Raptors shot 49 percent, but the Sixers outrebounded Toronto 47-35 and grabbed a couple of key boards in the final few minutes. Dalembert finished with four points and six rebounds. The Sixers center played just one preseason game because of a stress fracture in his foot. The Raptors led 24-22 heading to the second quarter, then used a 17-4 run to lead 58-50 at halftime. "We put ourselves in such a hole down 22 points,'' Sixers coach Maurice Cheeks said. "Toronto is a good basketball team the way they spread the floor and kick the ball to different players.'' Bargnani had seven points in the third, including a layup with 6:04 left in the quarter that gave Toronto a 22-point lead. The Sixers outscored Toronto 12-4 to the end of the quarter, cutting the Raptors' lead to 81-67 heading into the fourth. Notes: The Raptors handed out several awards before the game: Bosh for all-NBA second team, and Jorge Garbajosa and Bargnani as all-rookie first team. Mitchell was honored for being named Coach of the Year, and GM Bryan Colangelo as NBA executive of the year. ... A vocal group of Toronto FC fans occupied a section of the arena.

Willie Green had one of those stretches that shooters dream about. ``The basket seemed like it was getting bigger and bigger,'' Green said after tying a season high with 23 points as the Philadelphia 76ers survived a late rally for a 99-95 victory Saturday night over the Toronto Raptors. ``The guys were able to get me the ball and I was able to make some shots.'' Green scored 10 points in the third quarter, including a pair of long three-pointers, when the 76ers seemed to take control of the game. ``Willie played a nice game,'' said 76ers coach Maurice Cheeks, whose team won for just the second time in their last 10 games. ``He showed his ability to get inside the defence with some curls and some mid-range shots, and that really opened up his three-point game.'' Andre Miller and Andre Iguodala each added 20 for the 76ers (16-25), who had a 24-5 run that started late in the second quarter and continued until midway through the third. Montreal's Samuel Dalembert equalled Green with 10 points in the third quarter. He posted his fourth double-double in the last five games, finishing with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Dalembert is averaging 11.7 points and 10.1 rebounds as the season hit the halfway mark for both teams. ``Sam has been a factor for us,'' Cheeks said. ``When we keep him in the game and he stays out of foul trouble, he clogs the middle, rebounds the ball, and gives us a shot at winning some games.'' Dalembert also did a fantastic job of defending Raptors star Chris Bosh _ for three quarters. The 76ers led 86-66 with 8:11 left before Bosh got untracked and Toronto used a 22-6 run to pull to 92-88 with 1:06 left. But Anthony Parker missed an open three-pointer that could have brought the Raptors within a point before the 76ers iced the game from the foul line. Bosh had 25 points, 14 in the fourth quarter, to lead the Raptors (22-19), who lost for just the second time in seven games. Juan Dixon added 18 points and Jamario Moon scored a career-high 17 for Toronto. ``It was just way too big of a deficit,'' Bosh said. ``Being the team we are, we're going to try to force the issue and come back until the end, but you can't dig a hole that big and expect to climb out.'' With both teams playing their second game in as many nights, the 76ers (6-for-17) and the Raptors (7-for-20) struggled from the outset, though Toronto led 18-15 after one period behind seven points by Moon. The 76ers remained cold for most of the second quarter, missing nine straight shots and going 7:47 without a field goal during one stretch of the first half, but found their stride right before intermission. Philadelphia finished the second quarter on a 9-0 run and took a 42-40 lead into the break when Iguodala flipped in an off-balance shot in the lane and converted a three-point play with 1.5 seconds left. That momentum continued as the 76ers followed with their best third quarter of the season, outscoring the Raptors 34-16. They built their first double-digit lead, 57-45, on Green's three-pointer from the corner and took a 76-56 lead into the final period when Iguodala beat the buzzer again, this time on a long jumper with his foot on the three-point line. ``I think our turnovers got them on a roll,'' Bosh said. ``They scored a couple of fast-break points, got a couple of putbacks, and before you know it, they're making 15-foot jumpers and three-pointers and playing with a lot of confidence.'' Bosh's dunk with 2:55 left capped a 16-4 Toronto run and pulled the Raptors to within 90-82, but Miller answered with a jumper and the 76ers had just enough down the stretch. ``You have to play perfect basketball to come all the way back,'' Toronto coach Sam Mitchell said. ``We made a game of it, but we didn't play well enough for enough minutes to win the game.'' Notes:Dalembert has scored in double figures five consecutive games, a season high. ... Bosh is averaging 31.2 points in his last six games. ... Toronto was bidding for its first season sweep of Philadelphia. The Raptors have finished 3-1 against the 76ers five straight seasons.

Enjoy. ;)

PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 9 (AP) -- Chris Bosh has been shooting at least 100 free throws every day in practice. The extra work is paying off. Bosh made 16 of 18 free throws, scored 24 points and had 10 rebounds to help the Toronto Raptors snap a three-game losing streak with a 105-103 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday. Bosh is 48-of-52 from the line in six games, while going 26-of-66 from the field. "My percentage from the field isn't good right now,'' Bosh said. "If I'm wide open, I'm going to take the jump shot. If not, I'll go to the basket and try and draw the foul. I have confidence in my free throw shooting.'' Anthony Parker added 22 points, including a 3-pointer with 33.7 seconds remaining. T.J. Ford had 16 for the Raptors. Raptors coach Sam Mitchell said it was a confidence boost to simply win the game. "Every night is a grind,'' he said. "There are no easy wins.'' Andre Iguodala scored 17 of his 26 points in the second half, and Louis Williams scored 19 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter for the Sixers. Williams' 3-pointer with 55.2 seconds remaining pulled the Sixers to 98-96. But Parker came right back with a clutch 3-pointer of his own for a 101-96 advantage. "It's good to see the ball go through the hoop,'' Parker said. "Defensively, I felt like we did a good job, forcing them to take some tough shots, which they hit.'' On the Sixers' next possession, Williams hit a 3-pointer and was fouled by Parker. Williams connected on the free throw for a rare four-point play, cutting Toronto's lead to 101-100 with 21.4 seconds left. "I was watching some old high school tape of myself and I noticed I was going to the basket,'' Williams said. "I just tried to do that in this game and take what was open.'' Two free throws by Bosh gave Toronto a 103-100 lead before Williams had the opportunity for a three-point play with 15.2 seconds left, but he missed the free throw. With Philadelphia down 105-102, Iguodala went to the line with 1.8 seconds left. He missed the first shot and attempted to misfire on the second only to send the ball through the hoop. "We don't have a lot of room for error,'' Iguodala said. "We have to box out and get our hands on loose balls.'' Williams carried the Sixers in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 points in the first 5:35. His jumper with 5:25 left tied the game at 87. The Sixers made it 92-91 on a basket by Iguodala with 3:52 to go, but Bosh responded with five straight points -- two free throws and a layup -- for a 96-91 lead. Notes: Raptors coach Sam Mitchell made a change in his starting lineup, replacing Andrea Bargnani with Rasho Nesterovic. "We're not panicking because we're 2-3,'' Mitchell said before the game. "We're just trying to get the most out of the guys.'' ... Jamario Moon hit his first career field goal in the second quarter. ... The Raptors connected on their first 17 free throws. ... After drawing just 9,317 fans for Wednesday's game against Charlotte, the Sixers had a slightly larger crowd of 10,886 against Toronto. ... The Raptors led 24-19 after the first quarter, a major turnaround from their last three games in which they were outscored 91-60.

Enjoy. ;)

4-20-2008 AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- The Detroit Pistons were hanging out at the scorer's table as if it were a preseason game, joking around with a former teammate as he enjoyed a drink and nachos in the front row. Philadelphia made them pay for it. Andre Miller scored 20 points, and Willie Green had a career playoff-high 17, helping the 76ers stun Detroit 90-86 on Sunday in Game 1 of their first-round series. Sixers forward Reggie Evans smiled when told the Pistons were shooting the breeze with Flip Murray during breaks in the game. "That's good," Evans said. Rasheed Wallace took the blame for the loss -- despite having 24 points, nine rebounds and matching a franchise playoff record with seven blocks -- but didn't think blowing a big lead had anything to do with talking to Murray. "That's my man," Wallace explained. The Eastern Conference's second-seeded team was expected to beat the seventh-seeded Sixers by double digits and did lead by 15 midway through the third quarter. But Philadelphia refused to follow the script. After the Sixers trailed 62-47, Green made two baskets during a 10-0 run that sparked a comeback. "That kind of swung the momentum," Miller said. Miller gave Philadelphia a lead midway through the fourth quarter for the first time since late in the first. After Chauncey Billups missed three of four free throws and a layup in two-plus minutes late in the game, he made two from the line to pull the Pistons within one with 45 seconds left. Detroit's Jason Maxiell drew a charge on the ensuing possession, giving the home team a chance to avoid an upset. The Pistons set up a play that created an open shot for Tayshaun Prince, but his jumper was short. After Andre Iguodala made one of two free throws with 11 seconds left, Wallace missed a shot near the basket that would have tied it at 88. "I'm going to put this one me," Wallace said. "There's no excuses. "The last bunny, that was a bucket I should've made. I'm going to take this one on the chin." Iguodala made two free throws with seven seconds left to seal the victory. "I'm pretty sure we shocked a lot of people," Evans said. Both teams will get two days off before Detroit plays host to Game 2 on Wednesday night. "We've got to fire back on Wednesday," Pistons coach Flip Saunders said. "It's a must-win game now." The Pistons, who have advanced to five consecutive conference finals, hadn't lost a Game 1 in the first round since 2003 against Orlando. Iguodala finished with a career playoff-high 16 points after a slow start, Evans had a career playoff-high 11 points and 14 rebounds and Thaddeus Young scored 10 for the Sixers in his postseason debut. Billups scored 14, Richard Hamilton had 13 points on 5-of-17 shooting, Maxiell contributed 12 points and a career playoff-high 11 rebounds and Prince added 12. The Sixers started and closed strong despite being the least-experienced team in the playoffs, matching up with a team that trails only the San Antonio Spurs in combined playoff games. "There's no question that we grew up in the second half," Philadelphia coach Maurice Cheeks said. Philadelphia led by six points early in the game, but Detroit scored the last 11 points of the first quarter and held the Sixers scoreless for five-plus minutes. That drought spilled into the second and included a cold stretch in which they made only 2 of 21 shots. Wallace's 3-pointer midway through the second quarter capped a 23-6 run and gave the Pistons an 11-point lead. The Sixers scored the first eight points of the second half, and Detroit missed its first six shots before going on an 11-2 run to lead by 15. The Pistons, notorious for their inconsistent effort, proved the cushion wasn't large enough. "That's Detroit," Iguodala said. "They turn it on and turn it off. "We just kept fighting the whole way."
