T.J. Ford was on the bench in street clothes and Chris Bosh had long since limped to the locker-room with a groin strain when the Toronto Raptors surged ahead of the Memphis Grizzlies for good Wednesday. The injury-depleted Raptors displayed the depth of their roster once again en route to a 103-91 win over the visiting Memphis Grizzlies. ``That's our strength, especially with such a long season, so many things can happen,'' said Anthony Parker. Parker finished with 19 points to top Toronto (8-7), which used a balanced attack to beat the struggling Grizzlies, with seven players scoring in double figures. Jose Calderon added 13 points and 10 assists and committed just one turnover while Carlos Delfino and Jason Kapono scored 14 apiece. Andrea Bargnani finished with 11, while Rasho Nesterovic pitched in with 10. Chris Bosh had 10 points before leaving the game in the second quarter with a strained right groin, the one negative on the night. Bosh said he'd hurt his groin a day earlier in practice. ``I was just trying to get going,'' said the all-star forward. ``Usually it's one of those things that when you get warm, you don't feel it. But it was a little painful making certain cuts, so I decided to take it easy. ``I'm sure after a good rest tomorrow and good treatment, I'll be ready to go Friday (when the Raptors host Cleveland).'' Juan-Carlos Navarro led the Grizzlies (5-10) with 15 points, while Pau Gasol had 13. Toronto outshot and outhustled the Grizzlies all night, blowing open the game with a second-quarter performance that saw them outscore their visitors 30-10. ``I think that's when they brought in their second unit, and I don't think there's really a dropoff when we bring anybody off the bench,'' Parker said. Toronto led by as much as 28 points in the third and took an 82-60 lead into the fourth quarter at the Air Canada Centre. The Grizzlies cut Toronto's advantage to 14 points on three-pointer by Tarence Kinsey with 1:51 left, but the game was well decided by that point. ``We were too stationary, we stood a lot, we weren't efficient and that's when they made their run and broke open the game,'' said Gasol. The Raptors also lost Bargnani with about 10 minutes to go in the game, when he banged knees with Stromile Swift. ``Now is better than when I was coming off the court, so we'll see tomorrow,'' Bargnani said. Calderon continues to fill in seamlessly for Ford, who missed his fourth straight game with an arm injury. Calderon has just two turnovers in his last three games _ and his lone giveaway Wednesday came just before he was subbed off, when Parker let a pass slip through his fingers. ``A.P. is killing me,'' Calderon joked afterwards. ``I just want to publicly apologize for the last turnover,'' Parker said. ``I dropped it.'' It wasn't all bad news on the injury front. Nesterovic played his first game after missing five with an ankle injury, and his size up front was certainly appreciated when both Bosh and Bargnani went out. The Raptors shot 51 per cent on the night, while holding the Grizzlies to 39 per cent, and Toronto outrebounded the visitors 46-38. ``We got to their shooters, we didn't let those guys get hot and get going and we did a good job on Pau Gasol,'' said Raptors coach Sam Mitchell. With four Spaniards on the two rosters, the game was billed as ``Spanish Night.'' The game was broadcast live in Spain, and some two dozen Spanish journalists were in attendance. Calderon and Jorge Garbajosa make up Toronto's Spanish contingent, while the Grizzlies have Gasol and Navarro. Garbajosa, though, is out indefinitely with surgery pending on the ankle he injured last March that ended his rookie season prematurely. The Grizzlies led 29-27 at the end of a first quarter that saw seven lead changes. Delfino led the way with 14 points in the second quarter and Toronto took an 18-point lead late in the frame on a Parker jump shot. The Raptors shot 68 per cent and held the Grizzlies to a woeful 16 per cent shooting in the quarter, and Toronto was up 57-39 at the break. The Raptors stretched their lead to 79-51 on a driving dunk by Parker with 4:21 left and left 82-60 with a quarter left to play. NOTES: The Raptors defeated the Grizzlies at Memphis last week. . . The game was the second of a three-game homestand. The Raptors host Cleveland on Friday, then play the Wizards at Washington on Saturday.

Melo, A.I. take turns drubbing Grizzlies in Anthony's return Allen Iverson raced downcourt and floated an alley-oop lob that Carmelo Anthony shoved one-handed through the hoop for an arena-rattling jam, one that seemed to holler to all their doubters, "Take that!" "We just wanted to show the whole world we could play together," Anthony said after the duo's triumphant debut Monday night. "We know there's a lot of doubt about that." Anthony scored 28 points in his return from a 15-game suspension for fighting and Iverson added 23 in the Denver Nuggets' 115-98 rout of the Memphis Grizzlies. The two are out to prove two superstars can coexist. So far, so very, very good. Chris Bosh had 22 points and 19 rebounds, and the Toronto Raptors overcame a poor shooting performance to beat the Memphis Grizzlies 95-89 Wednesday night. Jason Kapono added 14 points, while Andrea Bargnani and Carlos Delfino scored 13 apiece. Bargnani also had 11 rebounds. The Raptors snapped a two-game losing streak despite shooting 39 percent. Bargnani finished 5-of-16 from the field, while Jose Calderon, who had 10 points and eight assists, was 4-of-13. Mike Miller and Pau Gasol each had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Memphis, while Rudy Gay scored 15 points. The teams were tied entering the fourth. After the Raptors built an early five-point lead in the period, Memphis erased the advantage with nine unanswered points. Memphis held an 82-80 lead with 2:33 left after Kyle Lowry hit a free throw. But the Raptors reeled off a 9-0 run for an 89-82 lead, and held on to break a four-game losing streak in Memphis. For the most part, it was a night of airballs from short distances, layups clanking off iron and close-range putbacks coming up short. But Toronto, the second-best 3-point shooting team in the league at 42.9 percent, connected on 11 of 21 attempts. Bargnani was 3-of-4 and Delfino 3-of-5. Both teams struggled from the floor in the first half before the Raptors carried a 46-44 lead into the break. Bosh scored 12 points for Toronto. Miller registered the same amount for Memphis. Despite shooting 25 percent in the first quarter, Toronto was still close. Bargnani missed his first six shots and Bosh connected on only two of his initial eight attempts. Both teams stayed below 38 percent shooting in the half. While the Raptors shot poorly, they were protecting the ball, committing their only two turnovers in the first half. The second half was slightly better from a shooting standpoint. Bargnani had eight points in the third quarter, but neither team could pull away, and they entered the fourth tied at 68. Notes: Despite the win, Toronto is one of only three teams over which Memphis holds a series advantage. The other two are the Clippers and Charlotte Bobcats. ... Raptors G T.J. Ford sat out the game with an "arm stinger'' sustained in the third quarter of Tuesday's game against Dallas. Ford took a knee to the chest as he tried to draw a charge. ... Memphis C Darko Milicic missed his third game because of a sprained left thumb. Meanwhile, rookie G Mike Conley missed his second game with a right shoulder injury. Memphis coach Marc Iavaroni said after medical experts evaluated the tear in the posterior labral, it was determined surgery, which could have ended Conley's season, was not necessary. ... Bosh already had his sixth double-double of the season by the 4-minute mark of the second quarter. ... Stromile Swift was called for a flagrant foul in the first quarter when he tried to block Jamario Moon's breakaway layup, and Moon landed hard under the Raptors' basket.

February 24, 2008 (this is why LeBron is MVP: http://kb24overrated.com/2008_mvp_race_kobe_vs_lebron) CLEVELAND -- LeBron James and his new teammates didn't need any time getting acquainted. James scored 25 points and had 11 assists while all four players acquired in Thursday's blockbuster trade contributed, leading the Cleveland Cavaliers past Memphis 109-89 Sunday night. COMMENTARY Now with true weapons, Cavs poised to make title run by Gregg Doyel • What's Your Take? Tell Gregg your opinion! As debuts go, these new-look Cavaliers were a smashing success. Cleveland built a 28-point lead midway through the second quarter and coasted to victory. While emphasizing his team has a lot of work to do on the practice floor, Cavaliers coach Mike Brown was pleased with the result, which had the crowd at Quicken Loans Arena cheering the entire game. "It brought some energy to the building," Brown said. "It was energy from the fans because of the new players." Ben Wallace, who started at power forward, scored 12 points, tying his season high, and had 10 rebounds, while Delonte West, the starter at point guard, scored five points with six assists. The other two players picked up in the deal, forward Joe Smith and guard Wally Szczerbiak, came off the bench late in the first quarter. Smith scored 14 points while Szczerbiak had 10. James said he was certain the new players would help the team. At one point in the third quarter, the NBA's leading scorer was on the floor with all four of them. "It was good to see all those guys play well," James said. "It was exciting to be on the floor with them." Brown said the lineup and combinations he uses could change frequently until the players get comfortable playing together. The other three starters were James at power forward, Zydrunas Ilgauskas at center and Devin Brown at guard. All four new players received loud ovations throughout the evening. The Cavaliers gave a video tribute to them before the game, fans were given "Welcome to the Family" signs and several "Big Ben" T-shirts were spotted in the crowd. Wallace and Smith were acquired from Chicago while West and Szczerbiak were picked up from Seattle in the three-team, 11-player deal that was finalized minutes before the deadline. Wallace, the target of criticism by Bulls fans, enjoyed his new home. "The crowd was great," he said. "I didn't get booed. That's new for me." James was pleased with Wallace's contributions. "He showed it tonight, his ability to get up and rebound and his ability to throw down dunks," James said. "And he made free throws, too." It didn't take long for the newcomers to make an impact. Wallace brought the crowd to its feet with a dunk less than two minutes into the game and West hit a 3 midway through the period. Smith, who made his first four shots, hit a 17-foot jumper early in the second period while Szczerbiak scored on a layup off a feed from Devin Brown midway through the period. That basket gave the Cavaliers their biggest lead, 47-19. "Anytime you play with LeBron, you're going to get open looks," Smith said. "I felt pretty comfortable with my shot and want to get to open spots." One of the biggest ovations of the night came when Wallace, a 42 percent free throw shooter this season, knocked down two foul shots late in the first quarter. While everything was positive from the Cavs' standpoint, Brown was still cautious. "We've got to keep taking this thing one day, one game at a time," he said. Practice (on Monday) is going to be big for us because we can't afford to waste a day in trying to get better on both ends of the floor." Memphis played without swingman Mike Miller, who missed his third straight game with a sore back. Ironically, it was rumored Miller would be traded to Cleveland as the deadline approached. The Grizzlies, who have lost 10 of 11, cut the lead to 12 in the fourth period, but the huge deficit was too much to overcome. Hakim Warrick led Memphis with 21 points and Rudy Gay had 19. "I was really proud of the way our guys came out of the locker room in the second half, as poorly as we played in the first half," Memphis coach Marc Iavaroni said. "We came out a little bit waiting for something to happen instead of making something happen, and we got that result."
