Baron Davis says the Golden State Warriors play such a carefree, entertaining game that it's easy to forget every night is part of a fight for their playoff livelihood. The Toronto Raptors don't have any such concerns about making the post-season and maybe that was one reason Davis and his teammates were tougher in the final minutes Wednesday night. Monta Ellis scored 33 points and Davis had 23 points and 15 assists in the Warriors' seventh victory in eight games, 117-106 over the slumping yet still playoff-bound Raptors. Davis paced the Warriors' 40th victory of the season by ramping up his Warriors after T.J. Ford rallied Toronto midway through the fourth quarter to its first lead since the opening minute. Davis hit a jumper and had two exceptional assists in the next 90 seconds, giving Golden State a lead it wouldn't lose. The Warriors need every win they can get in the frighteningly competitive Western Conference, where a team could finish 20 games above .500 and miss the playoffs. Golden State is in eighth place at 40-23. ``I've never been involved in something this tight in my career,'' said Davis, the only Warriors player to appear in every game this season. ``This is just a tremendous time to be playing basketball. Every game is an opportunity to move up and see where we can finish.'' Stephen Jackson added 19 points for the Warriors, who overcame several awkward matchups with Toronto's larger lineup to beat the Raptors for the fourth straight time in Oakland and finish the regular season 20-10 against East teams. Golden State took an early 20-point lead before falling behind with 6 1/2 minutes to play, but Davis and Ellis confidently led a comeback for the Warriors' third straight win. Davis had 10 points including the Warriors' last seven _ and six assists in the final period. ``That's his quarter, and he seems to get it to a different level in the fourth quarter,'' Warriors coach Don Nelson said of Davis. ``He's one of those rare guys that can do that.'' Ford scored 13 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter for the Raptors, who lost for the sixth time in eight games. Anthony Parker added 22 points for Toronto, which lost to the Lakers one night earlier to open a five-game West Coast road trip. ``It's a tough back-to-back, but I don't think fatigue was a factor for us,'' Parker said. ``I thought we fought hard through it, and it was more about taking care of the ball and getting back on defence and limiting the fast-break baskets, which I think we did a better job of in the second half.'' Toronto played its seventh straight game without leading scorer Chris Bosh, who hopes to return from his sore right knee during the trip. Size wasn't the Raptors' problem, as Andrea Bargnani, Rasho Nesterovic and Kris Humphries all took turns scoring easily in the paint against Golden State's small-ball lineup. Despite their recent struggles culminating in their flat final minutes against Golden State, the Raptors (34-30) are solidly in fifth place in the Eastern Conference playoff picture. If the Raptors had the same record in the West, they would be 6 1/2 games behind Golden State in 10th place, out of the playoff race. ``We dug ourselves a big hole, and we fought so hard,'' Ford said. ``I think that happens a lot in the NBA. You work so hard, and we finally get right there, and they go on another run. We got the lead by one point, and then we just went into a drought.'' Golden State jumped to a 37-17 lead on Mickael Pietrus' dunk to open the second quarter, but Toronto stayed close largely thanks to Parker, who bested defence from both Davis and Ellis. The Warriors also missed 12 of their first 13 three-pointers before Jackson hit back-to-back shots in the third quarter. Notes: Warriors F Chris Webber still isn't ready to return from his left knee injury after a week of rehabilitation in Atlanta. Webber has missed Golden State's last five games, and Nelson has no idea when he'll return or if he'll be able to get in shape quickly enough to make the Warriors' playoff roster. ... Pietrus started and scored 14 points before fouling out with 3:35 to play. ... Golden State is two wins away from guaranteeing its second straight winning season after 12 straight losing campaigns.

OAKLAND -- After 101 minutes of sensational hoops in two days, the Lakers and the Warriors each emerged with one victory and a common desire to hang on to their respective postseason positions. If they do, these California rivals will meet again next month - though their playoff series will be hard-pressed to live up to this immensely entertaining miniseries. Lamar Odom made the go-ahead layup with 9.1 seconds left in overtime, and the Lakers shook off the Warriors' frantic regulation rally to hang on for a 123-119 victory Monday night, avenging their four-point loss one night earlier. Kobe Bryant scored 23 of his 30 points after halftime while playing with a gash under his left eye, and Odom had 23 points and 21 rebounds as the Lakers reclaimed the Western Conference's top spot and avenged Sunday night's 115-111 defeat. The Lakers overcame a 26-point deficit before losing at home Sunday, and they blew a nine-point lead late in regulation before rallying to win in Oakland. Both games kept fans riveted, with abrupt momentum swings and all manner of late-game heroics - and, unfortunately, one officiating decision that played a large role in the sequel. "We felt like we should've won the game last night, but Stephen (Jackson) made a couple of big shots, and tonight we made plays down the stretch,'' said Bryant, who had just two points in overtime under a heavy zone. "They just were not going to let me beat them. We had to trust that we're going to make plays, and we did.'' Los Angeles couldn't have done it without Sasha Vujacic, who scored 19 points and hit a 3-pointer with 43 seconds left in overtime. The game felt an awful lot like a playoff preview for the first-place Lakers and the eighth-place Warriors. Nelson kept Davis and Stephen Jackson on the floor the entire night, while Phil Jackson never took Odom out and gave Bryant just 65 seconds on the bench even after he got hit in the face inadvertently by Davis, causing a cut that required five postgame stitches. Fisher scored 18 points for the Lakers, whose fourth win in five games put them a half-game ahead of New Orleans for the top seed in next month's playoffs. Los Angeles also avoided losing its season series to the Warriors for the first time since the 1994-95 season. After Davis' tying free throws with 3.6 seconds left in regulation sent it to overtime, the game turned when the Warriors set up to inbound the ball at midcourt after Odom's layup. Delaney called an offensive foul when Ellis and Fisher got mutually tangled, and the Lakers then got two clinching free throws from Bryant with 3.3 seconds to play - his only points of overtime. "I thought it was going to be a no-call, just two guys fall down and the play goes on,'' Fisher said. "So when the whistle blew, it caught me off-guard as well. ... I don't think anybody was necessarily guilty of anything, but from the angle that Bob had, it looked (Ellis) had his hands to my chest, which he did. But like I said, I wasn't trying to fall down at all in that situation.'' Ellis had 18 points, nine rebounds and nine assists for the Warriors, who have lost four of seven in a critical stretch for their playoff hopes. Jackson added 29 points, but Golden State's lead over Denver for the conference's final playoff berth dwindled to a half-game. "I thought our comeback was great,'' Warriors coach Don Nelson said. "We really battled, and didn't have great games from everybody. I played my guys a lot of minutes both games, and fatigue was a bit of a factor, but we were right there to win it. It was a really great basketball game.''

With Stephen Jackson back from suspension, the NBA's highest-scoring team has another valuable option. Jackson scored 17 points, Andris Biedrins had 15 points and 14 rebounds and the Golden State Warriors beat the Toronto Raptors 106-100 on Sunday. "It was fun being back with my team, not only getting a win but being back with my family," Jackson said. "It feels real good." Baron Davis had 16 points, nine rebounds and seven assists to help Golden State win its second straight after opening the season with six consecutive losses. Kelenna Azubuike scored 16 points, and Al Harrington added 10 for Golden State, which saw all five starters reach double figures scoring. ADVERTISEMENT Despite the early struggles, the Warriors entered play Sunday leading the NBA in points per game. Jackson began the season by serving a seven-game suspension, the result of his guilty plea to a felony charge of criminal recklessness for firing a gun outside an Indianapolis strip club in October 2006. "Sitting at home watching the team start off 0-6 was hard," Jackson said. "I couldn't really criticize or critique anybody because I wasn't there so I just had to try to learn from watching from the sidelines and try to stay in shape as best as I could." With Jackson back, Warriors coach Don Nelson has another option besides Davis to spark his high-energy offense. "It's good to have Stephen Jackson back in our lineup," Nelson said. "We sure missed him. He played over 40 minutes but I guess he's well rested." Davis also appreciates Jackson's help. "We have confidence in him running the offense and me finishing on the back end," Davis said. Now I can be off the ball and I can finish plays instead of starting and finishing." Forward Austin Croshere said the 6-foot-8 Jackson presents matchup problems for most opponents. "We don't have a whole lot of guys on the team who can post up like he can, draw a double-team as well as create off the dribble," Croshere said. "You have to be very aware of Jack wherever he is on the floor. He makes things a little bit easier for guys on the perimeter or cutting to the basket." Nelson expects Golden State's offense to be even more potent once forward Matt Barnes recovers from a dislocated finger and second-year guard Monta Ellis improves his passing. "It makes it so much easier for me as a coach," Nelson said. "It gives me more ways to initiate the offense, more guys who can be in a scoring position." T.J. Ford scored 29 points for the Raptors (5-5), who have won just twice in six tries at home this season. Ford added eight assists and six rebounds. "He's a handful," Nelson said of Ford. "He's as close to (Steve) Nash as anyone I've seen." Andrea Bargnani scored 12 points and Chris Bosh had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Toronto. Golden State trailed 88-80 after three quarters, but opened the fourth with an 11-3 run that tied it at 91 with 6:39 remaining. "We made a spurt at the right time and they didn't," Nelson said. Croshere's 3-pointer with 3:51 left to play gave the Warriors their first lead since the second quarter, 96-94, an advantage Golden State did not relinquish. Toronto scored only 12 points in the final quarter, making just four of 22 shots. "They out-hustled us, made shots and we didn't," Ford said. Davis said the Warriors are starting to finish stronger. "We haven't been able to close out fourth quarters but these last two games have been phenomenal," Davis said. "We've been playing phenomenal defense in the fourth quarter and we need to continue to do that." Leading 32-29 after the first, Golden State connected on their first eight shots of the second to open a 48-41 lead with 5:42 left in the half. Toronto called timeout, then reeled off an 8-0 run, capped by a one-handed dunk from Jamario Moon to take their first lead of the game with 3:13 left. Toronto led 61-58 at the half. Ford scored a season-high 13 in the first quarter. Notes Raptors C Rasho Nesterovic will miss up to two weeks with a sprained right ankle.
