This is the single most important game of the modern basketball era. Also, it kept solidifying the fact that MJ saved his best for the best teams. MJ rarely cared to score big against poor teams unless he had to since it was a chance to get the team to play. In MJ's first 19 games vs. Detroit, he averaged 36ppg including a 61pt spanking the year before (a game I also have edited on youtube.com). After this 59pt game on national TV on Easter Sunday in front of a record crowd at Detroit, the Pistons' coach Daly had enough. He vowed never to let MJ beat them again. Born was the beginning of the most awesome defense ever - "The Jordan Rules". The basics of the defense were to 'funnel MJ to the middle so the big guys could knock him on his butt'. But, the defense was so specific that there was a rule for what to do wherever MJ had the ball. Go here: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/si_online/flashbacks/jordan/891106/ The "Jordan Rules" went on to revolutionize the game - making defense win championships. The Pistons went on to win two titles and their 'bruiserball' defense on Jordan forced the NBA to invent the flagrant foul. The Knicks and the Heat copied this football style and soon, the league's scoring plummeted. MJ, still scoring 30+ ppg was unaffected with his insane skills but the league itself couldn't score. We saw in the 90s, slow games with teams scoring just 60 points each with no one able to make any shots. After MJ retired, the NBA tinkered with the rules to get scoring back up and today, we are still seeing this tinkering with the shortened half-court clock, the lax hand-checking rules, the illegal step-in defense for centers and so forth. MJ is responsible for all this. I remember this game vividly. Few NBA games were on national TV so the ads building this game's drama were strong. We knew MJ and the Pistons already hated each other. The Pontiac Silverdome had a record crowd. What was MJ going to do? Well, all he did was go 21-27 for 59. But, the real key was that he won the game on two clutch defensive stops - a block and steal on Zeke - to make sure his 59 didn't go to waste. MJ's jumper was laser-like here and I remember actually being upset that he was so 'on' since that would mean he would be driving less. I wanted to see more acrobatic shots. But, that's just being a selfish fan. Enjoy The Master becoming 'The Master'.

1980s: The Bad Boys Era The Pistons' first trip to the Finals saw them face the Los Angeles Lakers, who were led by Magic Johnson, James Worthy, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. After taking a 3--2 series lead back to Los Angeles, Detroit appeared poised to win their first NBA title in Game 6. In that game, Isiah Thomas scored an NBA Finals record 25 points in the third quarter while playing on a severely sprained ankle. However, the Lakers won the game, 103--102, on a pair of last-minute free throws by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar following a controversial foul called on Bill Laimbeer, referred to by many Piston supporters, and Laimbeer himself, as a "phantom foul." With Isiah Thomas unable to compete at full strength, the Pistons narrowly fell in Game 7, 108--105. Prior to the 1988-89 season, the Pistons moved to Auburn Hills to play at The Palace of Auburn Hills. The 1989 Pistons completed the building of their roster by trading Dantley for Mark Aguirre, a trade that Piston fans would criticize heavily initially, but later praise. The team won 63 games, shattering the old franchise record, and steamrolled through the playoffs and into a NBA Finals rematch with the Lakers. This time the Pistons came out victorious in a four-game sweep to win their first NBA championship. Joe Dumars was named NBA Finals MVP. Game Four of the series marked the final game of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's career. 2004: Return to a Championship The Pistons' transformation into a championship team was completed with the February 2004 acquisition of Rasheed Wallace. The Pistons now had another big man to pose a threat from all parts of the court. The Pistons finished the season 54-28, recording their best record since 1997. In the 2004 playoffs, after defeating the Milwaukee Bucks in five games, they defeated the defending Eastern Conference champion New Jersey Nets in seven games after coming back from a 3--2 deficit. Detroit then defeated the Indiana Pacers, coached by Rick Carlisle, in six tough games to advance to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1990. Many analysts gave the Pistons little chance to win against their opponents, the Los Angeles Lakers, who had won three out of the previous four NBA championships, and who fielded a star-studded lineup that included Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant, Gary Payton and Karl Malone. However, the Pistons won the series in dominating fashion, defeating Los Angeles in five games for the team's third NBA Championship. The Pistons posted double-digit wins in three of their four victories, and held the Lakers to a franchise-low 68 points in Game 3. Chauncey Billups was named NBA Finals MVP.

The 2004 NBA Finals was the championship round of the 2003--04 National Basketball Association season. The Finals were between the Los Angeles Lakers of the Western Conference and the Detroit Pistons of the Eastern Conference, the Lakers held home court advantage. The series was played under a best-of-seven format, so the first team to collect four game victories would win the series. Although the Lakers were the heavy favorite, the Pistons won the series four games to one to win their first title since 1990. Incidentally, the Pistons also defeated the Lakers in 1989 Finals. Piston point guard Chauncey Billups was named the Most Valuable Player of the series. In winning, the Pistons won their fifth championship (3 NBA Championships, 2 NBL Championships). TORONTO (CP) -- The Detroit Pistons toyed with the Toronto Raptors all night long Friday, and then like a well-oiled machine pushed their game up to an entirely different gear. The hottest team in the NBA proved too much for Toronto, capturing their 11th consecutive victory with a 101-85 win over the Raptors. ``We were toe to toe with them for pretty much the whole game,'' said Toronto's Chris Bosh. ``But they put us to sleep a little bit, they were real methodical. And then when it was time to make plays, they just turned it on and they were really aggressive.'' Richard Hamilton scored 22 points to lead the Pistons (26-7), who own the longest current run in the NBA. [ ] Rasheed Wallace added 20 points, while Chauncey Billups finished with 18. Antonio McDyess had 12 rebounds. Andrea Bargnani had 25 points to top Toronto (17-16), while Bosh had 23 points and 16 rebounds. Jose Calderon finished with 15 points and nine assists and Jamario Moon added 10 points. The Pistons, 18-2 against Eastern Conference opponents, led for most of the night but never by more than 13 points, the Raptors making several runs that cut the gap to as little as a point. But after a basket by Calderon with 3:34 left in the game made it an eight-point Pistons lead, Detroit displayed its veteran poise. The visitors couldn't miss, outscoring Toronto 12-4 to the final buzzer making for a more lopsided score than reflected the game. ``Their execution was flawless,'' Raptors coach Sam Mitchell said of Detroit. ``They're smart basketball players. They're just a deep talented basketball team. Probably four of those guys are going to be on the all-star team this year. ``They won 11 games in a row for a reason.'' Toronto trailed by 13 early in the third quarter but battled back with Bargnani hitting a long jumper with two seconds left to cut Detroit's lead to 69-64, setting up what promised to be an entertaining final quarter. But the Raptors fizzled in the fourth, and the Pistons poured it on. ``We are definitely satisfied with how we are playing right now. Who wouldn't be?'' said Billups. ``Eleven straight games _ it is an amazing feat in this game with a lot of great players and a lot of great teams. We are definitely happy about that.'' Bargnani only took one shot in the fourth, and missed. ``I have to play better, the last quarter I didn't do so much,'' Bargnani said. The Raptors were playing their first game back home since going 3-4 on a gruelling West Coast road trip, capped by Monday's 97-92 win in New Orleans. It wasn't exactly the warm welcome home they were hoping for. The Pistons topped Toronto virtually across the board, shooting 51 per cent to the Raptors' 41, and outrebounding Toronto 47-36. After Bosh, Kris Humphries had the most Raptors rebounds with just six. Toronto's bench, normally one of its strengths, was outscored 27-5 by Detroit's. ``They just haven't played well,'' Mitchell said. ``You've got to come out and play with some energy, especially coming off the bench. You can't sit back and let the game come to you, you've got to come in with some energy, you've got to come in running.'' Toronto also struggled at the free throw line, hitting just 14 of 22 attempts. ESPN broadcast the game in the U.S., the first American television coverage Toronto has received at home in the regular season since Vince Carter was a Raptor. Mitchell and Raptors guard Anthony Parker were both mic'ed for the game. ``It's a privilege,'' Mitchell said before tipoff. ``We're here in Canada, and we feel like we've got a good basketball team, good people, a good organization, and we're excited that the NBA is here tonight.'' The Pistons shot 53 per cent in the first quarter, but never led by more than four points, leading the Raptors 22-19 heading into the second. Toronto cut Detroit's advantage to two points midway through the second, but the Pistons took off on a 14-4 run capped by a three-pointer by Billups that put Detroit up 48-36. The Pistons took a 48-39 lead into halftime. Bargnani led the way with 12 points in the third as the Raptors rallied to cut the Pistons' lead to two. Toronto would get no closer though and Detroit took a 69-64 lead into the fourth. NOTES: Canadian Stacey Dales was working for ESPN as a sideline reporter. Dales, from Brockville, Ont., also plays for WNBA's Chicago Sky. . . . Friday's game was the first of three straight at home. The Raptors host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday, then Philadelphia on Jan. 9. . . . The Pistons haven't lost since an 80-77 defeat in Houston on Dec. 12.
