The jitters that come with an NBA playoff debut prevented Chris Paul from taking his typical afternoon nap before playing the Dallas Mavericks. Unfortunately for the Mavs, Paul was the same player he's been all season when the Hornets needed him most, and the same "M-V-P!" chants that rained down from the New Orleans Arena stands during numerous recent triumphs made a thunderous postseason return. Paul had 35 points, 10 assists and four steals in his first playoff game Saturday night, lifting New Orleans to a 104-92 come-from-behind victory over Dallas in Game 1 of their first-round series. "Today, after shootaround, I couldn't go to sleep," Paul said, explaining that he instead tuned in to Game 1 of the Cleveland-Washington series, then some of the San Antonio-Phoenix opener. "I saw the intensity of it ... and I was like, 'Man, this is serious.' " Then he went out and performed like a playoff veteran, taking the game over with 15 third-quarter points as the Hornets erased a 12-point halftime lead. "Before we started the second half, I told him ' ... when series like this are up in the air, you've got to go out there and impose your will,' " Hornets coach Byron Scott said. Game 2 is Tuesday night. Scott had said leading up to this series that playoff experience was valuable but overrated. What else was he going to say? The Mavericks have been in the playoffs eight years in a row. The Hornets hadn't been to the postseason in four years, and their only current player on the roster back then was West, who was a rookie reserve. But for one game, at least, Scott's logic looked sound. West scored 23 points against Dallas. Tyson Chandler had 10 points and 15 rebounds to help New Orleans not only storm back but win going away. Dirk Nowitzki had his way with New Orleans early and finished with 31 points, but scored only four during Dallas' fourth-quarter collapse. Josh Howard added 17 points for the Mavericks, who were in the finals two years ago. "It's one game," Nowitzki said. "The team that loses has to go back, adjust and find ways to get it done the next game." Jason Kidd, the All-Star point guard the Mavericks were hoping would be the missing piece to a championship run when they traded for him midseason, finished with 11 points and nine assists. But the Mavericks had only nine field goals in the second half and no answer Paul, whose third year in the NBA has included a maiden All-Star game nod and serious consideration for league MVP. "In the third quarter he just dominated the game," Dallas coach Avery Johnson said. "We tried giving him a couple different looks, but we're going to have to be much more sound in our defense. We can't let him get out of our traps." The Hornets also got 14 points from Peja Stojakovic, one of their few grizzled playoff vets, who hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final period to help squelch any notion of a Dallas comeback. Dallas, which lost, stunningly, in the first round of last year's playoffs to eighth-seeded Golden State, won't go down without a struggle. With this game out of reach, the Mavs seemed to be already psyching themselves up for the next contest with physical play. Nowitzki and West were assessed double technicals after exchanging words, nose-to-nose, with West holding his hand up to the edge of Nowitzki's cheek. Afterward, both players downplayed the brief standoff as typical playoff intensity. New Orleans looked like a tight group in the first half, missing open jumpers, free throws, even a layup. The Hornets were 9-of-27 shooting in the first quarter, when Dallas took a 26-19 lead behind 11 points from Nowitzki. Hustling defense kept the Hornets within single digits most of the first half, but Dallas, which missed its first nine 3-point attempts, went ahead 49-38 on Kidd's open 3 late in the second period. Howard added another in the final seconds, putting the Mavs ahead 52-40 at halftime. The Hornets desperately needed a player to rise to the occasion on offense in the third quarter -- and Paul came through. He had a 7-0 run by himself on a jumper, driving floater and fast-break layup as he was fouled to pull New Orleans to 65-63. The Hornets tied it at 68 on Bonzi Wells' jumper with 2:20 to go in the third period, then Wells' steal led to Paul's fast-break layup for a 70-68 lead. Chandler's follow-up dunk made it 76-72 at the end of the third, during which New Orleans outscored Dallas 36-20. Paul then hit a floater, set up Chandler's alley-oop and West's layup during a 10-0 run early in the fourth quarter to put New Orleans up 86-74. "In the first half I thought we came out a little anxious, not loose enough," West said. "In the second half we got back to doing the things that got us to this point, and we were able to take over the game."

Until Dennis Rodman joins the Dallas Mavericks, they don't have anyone to get nasty inside the lane. The Philadelphia 76ers capitalized on that Tuesday night. Although Allen Iverson's two free throws with 17.1 seconds left were the difference in a 101-100 victory, Theo Ratliff's season-high 25 points and George Lynch's basket over 7-foot-6 Shawn Bradley were pivotal, too. "Theo was demanding the ball and we had to get it to him the way he was putting it in the hole," 76ers guard Aaron McKie said. Philadelphia's three-game losing streak appeared likely to grow as Dallas took a 10-point lead early in the fourth quarter. But a layup by Ratliff with 1:22 left tied it at 97. Steve Nash put Dallas up by one with a technical free throw off an illegal defense, but Lynch answered with a short jumper over Bradley. The basket gave the 76ers a 99-98 lead, their first since midway through the third quarter. "I went to the basket strong and shielded him off with my body," said Lynch, who is eight inches shorter than Bradley. New All-Star Michael Finley answered with a jumper at 28.4 seconds and appeared to be the hero again for Dallas when he snagged a rebound of Iverson's miss. But officials said Cedric Ceballos fouled Iverson on the play and the league's leading scorer swished his first free throw and bounced the second in off the front rim. Finley had the ball on Dallas' last possession, but he gave it up to Dirk Nowitzki. As two defenders ran at him, he dumped the ball to Steve Nash, who didn't seem to be expecting it. His ugly lob that bounced off the rim at the buzzer reflected that. "I was wide open, but I didn't really have time to set up," Nash said. "I just wanted to put it up to the rim and see if it fell." A smiling Iverson ran off the court and hugged coach Larry Brown, who moved into sole possession of 10th place on the career victory list with 708. On the other end of the floor, the Mavericks--who ended a four-game winning streak--were still upset about the foul called on Ceballos. Finley walked slowly to the scorer's table and gave it a loud whack with his fist. "He's a superstar and you're going to get those calls," Ceballos said. The 76ers returned to their winning ways in close games, improving to 11-3 in games decided by three or less. Their previous two games were losses by three and two points. "I don't like to lose one in a row, much less three," Iverson said. "I don't want to get that losing mentality." Dallas surprisingly has escaped that mode, having won seven of nine before this one. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak. But the Mavericks won't go very far if they continue to get outrebounded 54-39 and allow teams to make 51 percent of their shots as the 76ers did. For all the headaches he causes, Rodman can help turn those numbers around. Rodman arrived in Dallas late Tuesday, but he was not at Reunion Arena. He could decide Wednesday whether to sign with his hometown team. Ceballos led the Mavericks with 26 points and 12 rebounds. Finley had 21 points and Bradley added 17. "The All-Star stuff is secondary," Finley said. "My whole agenda is to win games. Tonight is a game we should've won and didn't." My brother playing for the Dallas Mavericks during the quarter break. My dad is holding the camera, the reason why there is so much shaking and stuff is because they usually don't allow camcorders in there and we tried to sneak it in so we did the best we can. in about 2 days we will have the real recording of my brother playing in center court until then. we got this. p.s. They wanted danny to dress up for this event. we didnt want him to but the mavs really wanted it so danny dressed up for it.

Coming on the tail-end of an emotional 24 hours, with guard T.J. Ford sidelined with another frightening neck injury, and against a formidable opponent they hadn't beaten in four years, Wednesday's game had all the makings of an ugly night for the Toronto Raptors. The Raptors thought otherwise. With Chris Bosh leading the way with 17 points, the Raptors beat Dallas 92-76 at the Air Canada Centre, their first win against the Mavericks in eight games. ``Our guys played well, coming off a back-to-back, getting in late, going through what we went through the last 24 hours, to come out as focused as we were,'' said Raptors coach Sam Mitchell. With Ford watching from the bench a night after his frightening crash at Atlanta, five Raptors scored in double figures. Jose Calderon finished with 12 points, while Jason Kapono and Rasho Nesterovic added 10 apiece for the Raptors (13-10). [ ] Jason Terry topped the Mavericks (14-9) with 21 points, while Josh Howard finished with 19, and reigning league MVP Dirk Nowitzki added 13. The Raptors took control of the game with a blistering second quarter, in which they outscored the Mavs 33-19 and led by as many as 19 points. Toronto took a 75-59 advantage into the fouth quarter. Bosh called it a huge win for Toronto. ``Especially coming off of a back-to-back,'' said the all-star forward. ``Sometimes you can let your guard down, you feel a little tired, we could have just been intimidated by them just because of what happened in Dallas last time we played them.'' Dallas had rallied from a 24-point deficit to beat the Raptors 105-99 back on Nov. 20, but Toronto wasn't about to let it happen again. Dallas cut Toronto's lead to 14 points on a three-pointer by Devean George with just over four minutes left in the game, but would come no closer, and the Raptors clinched their first win against the Mavs since a 77-71 victory on Nov. 6, 2003. ``They are a great home team, so they deserved to win as we weren't very good,'' said Nowitzki. Ford received a standing ovation when he took a seat on the Raptors bench. The previous night, he had been wheeled off the court on a stretcher after he was sent crashing to the floor by Hawks rookie Al Horford. ``Seeing T.J. in the locker-room, talking to him, seeing that he's stiff, he's a little sore but he's going to be OK, and hearing him say he's going to be OK, put everybody's mind at ease,'' said Mitchell. ``T.J., talking to him this morning, he told me no way he was not going to come to the game. It was important to him to come and support his teammates.'' Ford had scored 26 points and was driving to the basket when Horford hit Ford on the head. The six-foot guard landed hard on his back, his head bouncing off the floor. ``I'm definitely feeling a lot better compared to last night,'' Ford said. ``I'm still sore and still in pain, but not as much as I was as soon as the accident happened.'' Tuesday's game had marked the first time Toronto had its three stars _ Ford, Bosh and Bargnani _ in the lineup since Nov. 20. Now coach Sam Mitchell and the Raptors find themselves in an all-too-familiar position _ missing one of their most important players. ``I can't remember the last time we've had our whole team intact. It's been awhile,'' Mitchell said. There's no timeline for Ford's return, although he said he's going to give himself at least a week. Calderon has played well while logging major minutes in Ford's absence _ Ford had recently returned from missing six games with a ``stinger'' in his arm before Tuesday's injury. Wednesday was more of the same as Calderon finished with seven assists in 32 minutes of action. The Raptors bench had another strong night, outscoring the Mavs 43-18. ``Guys came in and played well, they earned the right to stay on the court and it just made the world of difference,'' said Mitchell. The Raptors shot 43 per cent on the night, and held Dallas to 39 per cent. The Mavs outrebounded Torono 44-42, with Erick Dampier grabbing 11 boards for the visitors. The Raptors led for most of the first quarter on 47 per cent shooting, but never by more than five points, and took a 21-17 lead into the second. Toronto opened the second quarter with a 15-2 run, and Bargnani's three-point play gave the home team a 36-19 lead. The Raptors stretched their advantage to 19 points late in the quarter and took a 54-36 lead into the break. Dallas rallied in the third, with a three-pointer by Howard cutting Toronto's lead to 68-59. But the Raptors ended the quarter on a 7-0 run, with a three by Kopono with 0.4 seconds on the clock sending Toronto into the fourth with a 75-59 lead. NOTES: The Raptors are at Indiana on Friday, then host the Boston Celtics on Sunday before heading out on a western road swing that includes a stretch of four games in five nights.

Kobe Bryant took charge late in the game, scoring 22 points in the fourth quarter and eight in overtime to finish with 52 Sunday in Los Angeles' 108-104 victory over Dallas. Mavericks coach Avery Johnson tried a variety of ways to stop him. Nothing worked. "We gave him a single look, then we double-teamed him, then we gave him a triple-team and he split the triple-team and scored," Johnson said. "We tried to zone him, we tried to funnel him in the trap for a zone and he went the other way. He didn't cooperate on any of our defenses. "Obviously he milked the free throw line on us and he just had it all going. He's a great player. He has these (games). Lots of these." Bryant hit the 50-point mark for the 22nd time in his career and first time this season. He went 15-of-27 from the floor and, constantly driving and drawing fouls, was 20-of-27 from the line. He was perfect shooting free throws in the fourth quarter, making 13, and converted the two he took in overtime. Dirk Nowitzki had 30 points for Dallas, including a 3-pointer with 2 seconds remaining in regulation to tie it at 93. He had nine points in the extra period, but missed a 3 that would have tied it again with seven seconds left. Jason Kidd, playing his seventh game for Dallas, had 15 points, 11 assists and six rebounds. He drove for a layup to pull the Mavericks within 105-104 and was fouled on the play with 11 seconds left in overtime, but then missed his only free throw of the game. "I felt confident at the free throw line, but I just left it short," Kidd said. "To tie the game, I have to be able to step up and make that free throw." He still thought it was a good game. "It was great for the players and the fans; both teams had leads, both teams fought to come back," Kidd said. Johnson said Kidd is still working his way into the flow. Dampier had 16 points and 17 rebounds when he fouled out with 1:19 left in regulation. The Lakers' Luke Walton fouled out with 7:11 remaining in the fourth quarter, going to the bench with 11 points and six rebounds. Bryant scored the Lakers' final 14 points in the fourth quarter, including a pair of free throws with six seconds left after getting the offensive rebound of Lamar Odom's second straight missed foul shot. Jason Terry, who left the game briefly with 8:14 remaining in the fourth quarter after hurting his right shoulder in a collision, returned with 6:38 left and finished with 18 points. The Lakers got back into the win column after their 10-game winning streak ended in Portland on Friday night. Kidd hit a 19-footer, had a steal and made a 3-pointer to give the Mavericks a 59-58 lead with 6:39 left in the third quarter, their first time in front since midway through the opening period. Dampier had nine points in the third and the Mavericks were up 68-65 heading into the final 12 minutes. The Lakers scored just 15 points and went 6-of-22 from the floor in the third, with Odom missing all five of his shots. ============================ EDITED BY BRUCE BLITZ ============================
