The 2008 NBA Champion, Boston Celtics cagers led by Kevin Garnett watched the bout of Manny Pacquiao vs. David Diaz at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on Sunday June 29, 2008 (Philippine time). Pacquiao knocked out Diaz in the ninth round. The Celtics players reportedly reserved 16 tickets to watch and support Pacquiao in his fight. The Boston Celtics players then went straight to Manny Pacquiao's room right after the Filipino boxing champ claimed his fourth world title in his fight with Mexican-American David Diaz. They were having pictures, chatting, and chanting "Manny!! Manny!! Manny!!!" I've seen the Celtics scream beat LA during the NBA Finals but never have I imagined them chanting "Manny!! Manny!!" Manny Pacquiao is a winner. But it makes me more proud as a Filipino that Americans such as the Boston Celtics recognize Pacquiao as a winner. In Pacman's locker room, the Boston Celtics came over to honor and celebrate with him. The radio personalities were even joking that Manny was happier to see Kevin Garnett than to win against David Diaz. Excerpts of interview with Boston Celtic's Kevin Garnett: Reporter: "Did you know KG, that Manny is your number 1 fan?" Kevin Garnett: "I'm his number 1 fan."

Across the USA, experts predicted a Lakers victory; some thought they might even do it in five games. But the Celtics had something more important going for them, something difficult to measure: desire. Realizing they might not get this opportunity again, they seemed to want the Larry O'Brien Trophy more than the younger players from Los Angeles in Tuesday's 131-92 Game 6 series-clinching victory. CELTICS WIN: Boston claims its 17th NBA title FIND MORE STORIES IN: Los Angeles Lakers | Boston Celtics | NBA Finals | Kevin Garnett | Phil Jackson | Doc Rivers | Walker | Kobe | Garden | Larry O'Brien Trophy "We talked about it this morning in shoot-around, that it was going to be our defense that was going to win the world championship for us," coach Doc Rivers said. "We challenged them before the game, 'For one time, let's play 48 minutes of defense, just all-out, denials, challenge shots.' " If there was a loose ball, Boston tracked it down. If two players fought for a rebound, the player in green and white commanded it. Sliding, diving, tipping, scrapping, sweat flying, the Celtics were all over the Garden parquet. And wherever Bryant pivoted, a swarm of Celtics converged on him. Even when he scored, a Boston player was draped on him. "They really focused on Kobe and made sure he was the guy who didn't hurt them," Jackson said. He returned a quarter later and finished with 26 points. •Kendrick Perkins, a game-time decision with a strained left shoulder, toughed out an inspiring 14 minutes. •And Rajon Rondo, who played 14 minutes in Game 5 and looked tentative offensively, came out with a more aggressive mind-set. He scored 21 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had eight assists. "Tonight Rondo was the star," Jackson said. "He pushed their offensive into high drive and created havoc for us." And Rivers did another terrific job of managing it all. When it was finished and the confetti filled the sky, Rivers turned his attention to his father, Grady Alexander, who died in November.
